The other day I found a ten-dollar bill in the pocket of my jeans. By the way I acted, you would've thought I'd found a love letter from Lance Kerwin or an autographed photograph of the Loch Ness Monster. I think I spent it all on a pack of Razzles and a Whizzer.
I'm doing research for a top-secret project, and need (yes, NEED ... not just WANT) to know: How much money does it take for you to get happy when you come across it unexpectedly in your pocket? Please tell me in comments, below. And know this: Every comment is as thrilling to me as an unexpected ten-dollar bill (or kiss from the dreamy star of James At 15 [or 16] or glimpse of Nessie).
fresh-baked at 10:30 PMI found a five dollar bill and totally freaked out!!!
Offered by: sherrice on August 4, 2005 5:30 PMOf course, when I find handfuls of gold chains, coins and other "rich stuff" in my pockets, I know that I really HAD found the abandoned pirate ship of One-Eyed Willie, that it wasn't a dream after all. Then, I think my Dad and I are going to be OK after all.
I usually have ditched my inhaler by that point anyway.
Offered by: Thomas on August 4, 2005 9:20 AMi found a quarter, and bought a gumball.
i was happy for two days after.
1 penny. That's all it takes. Being happy about money is a little weird for me, but that's just me.
Offered by: Dano on August 3, 2005 3:21 PMI found 100 buckaroos in a coat I hadn't worn in 2 years last fall. That made me happy. But I will jump for joy over a 10 spot. Anything less just doesn't do it for me.
Offered by: Fish on August 3, 2005 1:36 PMI once found a penny in my pocket. It made me smile... I have money handlers, I dont useally touch anything that dirty.
Offered by: Renato Araújo on August 3, 2005 12:56 PMI lived a lot of "lean" years, so finding even an unexpected dollar makes me happy. Takes me back to my college days, when I would search the car and couch cushions to scrape up enough change for a Shasta (cheap soda drink) and a plain bagel!
I used to be in love with Lance Kerwin!! Last I heard, he really fell on hard times and is leading a very depressing life.
Offered by: Shelby on August 3, 2005 1:36 AMI am with Miltie on this one. Money found in my own clothing does not make me happy. Now if you're talking money found in the street - I would say I need at least $20 to make me jump-up-and-down happy.
Offered by: oOo on August 2, 2005 8:11 PManything over $5 makes me happy. that's lunch.
but $20 and over is the great happy dance. let's face it, how many of us could leave much more than that in our pockets by "accident"? ;)
Offered by: Sarcomical on August 2, 2005 7:07 PMMy sister found $100 in a little red purse, tucked away in some shelving at the grocery store when we were pretty young. My mom bought us shoes with it. Finding even an unexpected dollar is exciting to me though. For some reason if it's all in change, it doesn't do anything for me.
Cheers!
Offered by: zurielle on August 2, 2005 5:58 PMIt takes at least $20 to get me excited.
A few years ago while purging my closet, I found a $100 bill in a shoebox! My dad had given it to me "strictly for emergencies" the day I went off to college. I'm so glad I opened the box before dumping it into the Goodwill pile! I guess I should have given the money to Goodwill, but I'm not THAT generous!
Offered by: mere on August 2, 2005 5:28 PMJay! No! No! NO!
People, perhaps one day soon I will write about the incident to which my friend Jay refers. Believe me, it won't be pretty. (Unlike me, of course. I am ALWAYS pretty. Always.)
I'm diggin' your answers, everyone. Good show!
Offered by: Jodi on August 2, 2005 2:52 PM$5 buys me a treat. $10 buys me paint. $20 buys me joy.
By the way, I'm so sorry to hear about the hairy ordeal while blowdrying. It's gashly.
Offered by: Jay on August 2, 2005 2:19 PMas broke as i am nowadays, i'm thrilled with a dollar. i actually jumped up and down at work when i found a dollar in my purse. it meant i could buy an $.89 bean burrito from taco bell.
Offered by: elizabeth on August 2, 2005 1:57 PMLast winter, I found a $10 bill in the pocket of my jacket. It had been there since the previous winter, and I was thrilled to have it again! Finding $10 or $20 of "secret" money is always a pick-me-up!
Offered by: Fed on August 2, 2005 1:35 PMThe best thing for me is when I to put on my winter coat that I haven't worn in 8 months... reach in the pocket and I find money, mittens, and maybe a hair elastic. I think I would be excited with a $20...but I would love for it to be a couple G's.
Offered by: Meg on August 2, 2005 1:15 PMAny money found within the orifices of one's own clothing is merely consumer surplus. It does not represent extraneous money which did not belong to you to begin with. Nothing to get excited about... there's no such thing as a free lunch.
That said, I do become rather giddy when I find a rogue Drachma in my pocket *wink*.
Offered by: Milton Freedman, PhD on August 2, 2005 12:39 PMBy the way, I just realized that I missed an opportunity to be OUTRAGEOUSLY CLEVER. I should have written, at the end of the entry, "Please give me your two cents." That would've been a hoot, yes, also a holler.
Excuse me while I LOL.
Offered by: Jodi on August 2, 2005 12:20 PMHello, everyone! I found a haypenny at the bottom of the Loch! It made me so very happy!
Offered by: Loch Ness on August 2, 2005 12:18 PM$5 just turns into a cup of coffee as $10 becomes lunch. A $20 bill in the pocket of my pants can make my day, but I'm still looking for some anonymous fan of my website that loves me enough to send me $8,000, without strings attached of course.
Offered by: Scott on August 2, 2005 12:16 PMA ten's pretty good but a twenty - well, that's as close to winning the lottery as I ever expect to get.
A wad of cash is nice no matter what the denomination. One of the fun things about working on a schooner in the summertime is finding tips that I'd stuffed in random pockets or bags or backpacks & proceeded to forget about by the end of the day. That's a "Woohoo!" moment every time.
Offered by: bonnie on August 2, 2005 11:42 AMI almost expect to find loose change making up a dollar or more, so finding a dollar doesn't do anything for me. A five ... meh, it's nice, but what can you buy with a fiver? Ten makes me go "Heh, cool."
But twenty? Yeah, that's a big-ass grin.
I once found $100 lying on the ground in the foyer of an office building. To whomever lost it: you made my day. Your karma has been debited, the books are all in order, and you will be collecting one day soon, I am sure.
Offered by: Nils on August 2, 2005 11:40 AMThe most I've ever found was $10. It literally blew into my hands in a windstorm. That made me happy. But I am equally thrilled when I find a penny on the sidewalk.
Offered by: Caitlinator on August 2, 2005 11:39 AMA Sacagawea makes me smile more than a dollar bill, but that's appreciated too.
A fin gets put into the wallet and adds a spring to myself.
A tenspot makes me order Chinese food for dinner regardless of the last time I ate Chinese food.
A twenty will get you a couch dance in back.
A fifty will get you the same with a "happy ending."
A C note will get me to come home with you where I'll Swiffer the floor, hand wash/dry the iced coffee glasses and polish your belly button from the inside... in that order...
Offered by: Thomas on August 2, 2005 10:20 AMI am with the Psychedelic Frog. A ten or a five is good, but a Twenty, now that's when i feel rich. Then I become a big spender, treating for dinner, drinks, the works. Although...finding a five would be great, because then I'd go right to the babka store, and buy us a nice fresh chocolate babka, and still have a dollar left over.
Offered by: elaine on August 2, 2005 9:54 AM$170 million. That's why I buy only "loose fit" jeans.
Offered by: tim on August 2, 2005 8:37 AMA five would suffice for me, though my best pocket find to date has been missing cosmetics, not forgotten money! ;-)
Offered by: fabdiva on August 2, 2005 5:23 AMTwo pounds and eighty five pence.
Offered by: Pete on August 2, 2005 3:08 AMAny note! Sometimes a 2 Euro coin in the fifth pocket of my jeans will do it!
Offered by: Leni on August 2, 2005 2:56 AMI am pleased with a ten dollar bill, sure. But to become officially excited I need a Twenty. There's something about a Twenty Dollar Bill that's more... authoritative.
Although there was this one time I was flat broke - no job, no car - and I was walking down the street and I found a Five dollar bill on the sidewalk. It was pretty much a religious experience.
By the way, I can't believe you referenced James at 15. I swear I was just thinking about that yesterday.
Offered by: Psychedelic Frog on August 2, 2005 2:41 AMA Susan B. Anthony silver dollar makes me wet.
Offered by: Vendela on August 1, 2005 11:46 PMIt only takes a dollar for me. Sometimes I even get happy when I find a quarter! The most I ever found was a 20 in my coat. :-)
Offered by: Lolly on August 1, 2005 10:52 PM
