The homeless man on Broadway refuses the bagel I offer. Jesus loves me, he says. I tell him I know and that Jesus wants him to have the bagel. "God is not in there!" he says. I want to ask if that's because there's no cream cheese but instead advise that God AND Jesus want him to take it. He refuses again, so I give it to a homeless guy on Fifth who accepts it with a quiet "God bless" and a gap-toothed smile.
