Bona Fide Sicko?

I just finished watching "American Psycho". This means, of course, that now I feel compelled to read about it on imdb.com. I prefer to read reviews after, rather than before, I watch the actual movies, because I like to take an "innocent" approach to everything I watch. I want to determine if it sucks on my own. Or, of course, if it doesn't suck.

Anyway, I like to read the User Comments on imdb.com, because I really enjoy the earnest yet poorly written commentary that "regular" people have to offer before I read the "professional" reviews. There is only one User Comment for "American Psycho". The person who wrote it says he really identifies with Patrick Bateman (the psycho in question).

As I read through the review, I began to "worry" a bit about the reviewer, who calls himself "onebrooksbrothers". He seems a little too turned on by Patrick Bateman's actions. I wonder if this misspelling, found in the last paragraph of his review, says it all.

P.S. If you haven't seen "American Psycho", I suggest you do — if only to indulge in a few sublime peeks of Christian Bale's spectacular form.

I know, he was hot, but I couldn't stand that movie.

Now I have that picture, and all is well.

Man, have you READ American Psycho? It makes the movie look like a fucking Mother Goose tale. That thing is GRIM!!! GRIM I say.

A friend of mine recently met the chick who wrote the script for AP - says she was pretty hot. Used to be a model or actress or something...

Offered by: wil on August 31, 2002 06:18 PM

Whoa... trippy. This melly chick was posting a comment almost at the same exact moment I was. Obviously we should get married.

Guinevere Turner, who wrote the screenplay, is hot.

She appears in "American Psycho" as Patrick's friend Elizabeth in the scene with Christie (the hooker Patrick picks up twice). She can also be seen here. Scrumptious.

Hmmm... yeah, he sounds like a prime example of sickness. And his use of that apostrophe is unforgiveable.

Offered by: Pete on August 31, 2002 08:41 PM

mmmm, that guy IS hot! (Christian Bale, not the onebrooksbro dude who is definitely psycho - I mean, WTF is with the apostrophe action? That alone is certifiable in my book! hah)

There are actually 544 comments for "American Psycho". I can't believe you missed this one:

"One of the Most Touching ad Powerful Thrillers in Movie History. Very Clever and Entertaining. An Acceptable amount of Gore, But nothing that Could make someone Vomit! It also Delivers very Good Acting and a Well Written Script. I Recommend this Film to Anyone. 10 out of 10."

That's A Lot of random Capitals! Does the "Acceptable amount of Gore" mean Karenna but not Al?

I also love imdb.com, by the way. It rocks.

I am so glad that people like onebrooksbrothers are allowed to roam the earth.

Now can we all please come to an agreement that you are not allowed to leave high school until you can correctly spell, to say nothing of using punctuation?

I've read AP (and it disturbs me to be a fan of Bret Easton Ellis books), but haven't seen the movie. I have complete faith however, as Wil suggests that it is much tamer. I can't imagine any censor even thinking about approving a direct copy of the book!

Looks like there's another movie for my "must-see" list.

Omygawd, I have finally found a "Seinfeld" fan !!

"goddamn if he ain't spongeworthy" Ari, you are a perfect human being.
(Sorry for going off-topic, couldn't help myself)

And I thought Ari was talking about Sponge Bob!

I purposely didn't mention the atrocious apostrophe abuse -- I was waiting to see how many of you would bring it up. I must say I'm very proud!

And I must confess that I didn't even look to see if there were more than one User Comment for "American Psycho". I suppose I was just too appalled by the apostrophe to look any further.

I saw AP based on a review I read by James Berardinelli, who usually does not steer me wrong. It was a good movie, but fell apart at the end a bit. JB gave it a four-star rating which is what prompted me to go out and rent it. Was I the only one bothered by the ambiguous ending? And the ATM machine incident...

If you liked AP, try out these two:

1. Thursday (stars Thomas Janes, Aaron Eckhart, and Paulina Poritzkova).

2. Men Behaving Badly (another Aaron Eckhart flick).

Cheers!

The book was, by far, a much better version of the story than the movie.

In the book, the way the writing style changed from chapter to chapter gave you more of an idea as to how psychotic he was. It went from 1st person to 3rd person and back. There were chapters that started and ended in mid sentences. It gave you the idea that the author was writing from a disturbed mind's point of view (?)

I think that (even as gruesome as it was) that the book was written in a style that had never been done before and it was brilliant.

They also made a part 2 to this movie..which I don;t think I would ever watch...but just fyi. ;)

Couldn't agree with you more about the flick. And Christian Bale flexing and staring at himself in the mirror whilst balling some whore from behind was brilliant.

Offered by: alise on September 3, 2002 05:15 PM

YES, Alise!!!

(The word "balling" makes me laugh and cringe at the same time, which is the exact same reaction I had to CB's flex/stare combo!)

I can't wait to buy the book now.
