This is a latch on a barred gate a few blocks from my apartment. I really want to steal it -- but I know that if I did, I would wind up behind a different set of bars.

OH MY GAWD... it is adorable. I can see why you would want to, ahem, borrow it for your own collection. I think you should take a picture of it. Send it to the woman who heads up Ballard Designs, but tell her that you photog'ed it in Paris (she loves all things French) and then she will make it and sell it for a lot of money in her very expensive catalog. That's the idea. Once other people see it there, other people with catalogs, they will start to sell it in about a year, which means in about 18 months, we could begin to see them showing up at our local T.J. Maxx stores. It is tre magnific!
